Best period to travel to Constantine
The Mediterranean climate means that summers in Constantine are hot and dry, with highs of 35 °C in July and August. To avoid the excessive heat, make sure to plan your activities in the morning or at the end of the day. Winter in Constantine is cold and wet, with an average temperature of 10°C. With a mild climate, spring and autumn are the best times to visit Constantine (and perfect for exploring the city).
What Constantine has to offer?
Crossing over the Oued Rhummel
The best way to discover the hilltop city is to cross its many bridges, not least the Sidi M'Cid. From up here, you are practically guaranteed breathtaking views of the deep gorges and Hamma Valley. A couple of metres below is the the stunning (and let's just say atypical) Pont de Chutes. And if you're not too afraid of heights, continue your visit by crossing the impressive Siid Rached viaduct and its 27 arches.
Awaken your Taste Buds!
Rich and colourful, Algerian food has a thousand and one flavours: and Constantine is known for having some of the best dishes in Algeria. As well as the famous couscous, chakhchoukha and chorba, make sure to try Trida constantinoise or Djouzia, a traditional sweet made with honey and nuts.
A Melting Pot of Culture
Today, Constantine is one of Algeria's most important cultural hubs and has managed to preserve the traces of many civilisations: Romans, Turks, Arab-Muslims... After travelling back in time at the Citra Museum and through the streets of the Medina, you can also see the Ottoman Palais D'ahmed Bey. The tour ends with a visit to the prestigious Emir Abdelkader Mosque, one of the largest in Algeria.
Ancient Remains of Djemila
Just 2 hours away from Constantine lies one of the world's most beautiful groups of Roman ruins, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. With its sumptuous pillars, amphitheatre and temples set amidst the mountains, Djemila, or "the beautiful" in Arabic, certainly lives up to its name! And don't forget to visit the museum, home to a collection of beautiful and colourful mosaics.
