Marseille
Known for its beauty and vibrant atmosphere, Marseille will leave you blown away! There are so many memories to be made in the sunny city of Marseille: from eating succulent fennel sea bass in the old port to watching a crazy race at the velodrome; or even leaving the old port warehouses in the early hours of the morning after a wild night at the Fiesta de Suds music festival. What Marseille has to offer?
The Canebière
Aïoli, pastis, bouillabaisse…. these are just some of the specialities you can sample as you make your way down the Canebière. Mind you, the street is only 1km long, giving you the perfect opportunity to sample the city’s authentic cosmopolitan vibe (and probably hear a song or two from the Reggae band Massilia Sound System).
Beautiful Landscape
Marseille made its fortune as a trading port with the east, and whilst it still has its eyes on trade opportunities with the Mediterranean, it’s grown to appreciate its beautiful environment and heritage. From the Estaque neighbourhood, where Marius met Jeannette, to the cliffs of the Calanques, the Corniche Kennedy and the Firoul islands, there are so many beautiful sights to see!
Heritage
As for heritage, the Euroméditerranée project has totally transformed the areas around the station, the Belle-de-Mai and the docks, now considered symbols of modernity. But if you’re not that keen on modern architecture, there are plenty of historic buildings to admire: the Palais du Pharo, Palais Longchamp, the Parc Borley, and the Course Belzunce! The Maison du fada is just as reasonably priced!
The Mucem
Found by the entrance to the Vieux-Port, the Mucem is dedicated to European and Mediterranean culture. It’s divided into several areas: including the J4, a contemporary building linked by a footbridge to the Saint Jean Fort, where you will discover both permanent and temporary collections. Don’t miss out on lunch or dinner at La Table du Môle Passedat, a restaurant with truly breathtaking views of the Mediterranean and Cathédrale de la Major.
