Best period to travel to Catania
On the east coast of Sicily, Catania has a beautiful Mediterranean climate. The springs are mild, perfect for going on hikes on Mount Etna. Summers are hot, with constant sunshine and highs of 40℃. The beautiful weather carries on through autumn and all the way to winter. Although a little wetter, there’s still a mild climate to enjoy in winter.

At the base of the volcano, on the east coast of Sicily, Catania is a little more sulphurous than Palermo. This beautiful city is entirely at the hands of its active volcano.
The town of Etna
Standing at 3345m in height, the smouldering volcano still watches over the Bay of Catania, like a dark cloud over the city.
An Eruptive Spirit
The black tinge of the buildings is characteristic of the towns near the volcano and usually establishes a sense of uneasiness. And with the active volcano of Mount Etna close by, you’d think this would be the case for Catania. Inseparable from the city- in fact, the only route to get to the volcano runs directly through the city centre- Etna is closely monitored, which is why you don’t need to worry about coming here.
Monuments
With scorching red-hot lava at its head, but cooling sea at its feet, Catania is a bustling port brimming with ancient monuments: the Badia di Sant’Agata (Abbey of Saint Agatha), a patron saint of the city, the Cuomo and its baroque piazza, designed by Vaccarini, and the Diotru, an elephant topped by an obelisk in the middle of a fountain, the emblem of Catania.
